Effective Use of Communication Design Elements For Fashion Content Creators

What Exactly are Communication Design Elements?

Let’s keep this simple. Communication design elements are essentially the visual and auditory elements that you’d use in your content to promote something and attract your target audience. For example, filters, sounds, text, and editing of your videos for TikTok are all parts of communication design. This also applies to Instagram content, but may include more detailed text or graphics when it comes to photos.

Why Effective Use of These Elements is Important

While the general concept of communication design elements is seemingly simple, proper execution is important to getting your point across and attracting the right audience. As I’ve previously mentioned, you’re only as good as your branding strategy, and effectively utilizing communication design elements plays a big part in your branding. An example of someone that I believe has achieved a cohesive brand among different platforms by utilizing these elements, is Hannah Harrell. She combines high-end fashion with a dark and moody yet glamorous aesthetic. Her videos on TikTok showcase her somewhat chaotically putting together an outfit that matches with her aesthetic, and then on Instagram that same outfit will be posted to her feed in pictures. Each photo is perfectly curated to bring a visual flow and cohesiveness to her Instagram feed, and almost wants to make you jump into your phone just to see what it’s like to live a life of glamour.

How to Effectively Utilize Communication Design Elements

This all circles back to the idea of branding. Before creating posts and content with communication design elements, first determine your personal brand image and identity. You don’t necessarily have to close yourself into a box and pick one niche, there’s plenty of content creators who have become well-rounded in many areas of social media. Someone who does this well is Acquired Style, aka Brigette Pheloung on TikTok and Instagram. She showcases her style while also being an expert on the perfect blowout. Additionally, she posts recipes on how to make the perfect iced coffee. But for example, let’s say I have a 9-5 office job in a large city, like New York, working in fashion and I want to start creating my own content and gain a social media following to make extra income off of. I can choose to be a lifestyle creator that focuses on my outfits and styling ideas, but could also include cooking and restaurants in my content since that interests me as well. As someone who loves many different styles, I could post outfit idea videos or slideshows to TikTok, offering advice to my followers. Pairing this with a “day in my life” video can show me wearing these outfit ideas in real time to inspire others. To take it a step further and include the restaurant and cooking element, I can offer different outfit ideas to match different restaurant vibes. The way I speak, the sounds used, and the edits made are all going to affect my engagement. Keeping track of trending sounds on TikTok and using apps like CapCut for editing can be helpful to effectively communicate the message in your content. Generally, if you can decide on the type of content you want to create and pair it with the effective use of communication design elements, your content should bring you success in connection you with the right audience.
